Hello,
in iRMC S7 the Media Boost for Remote Storage can be optionally activated to expedite the boot of remote storage media. Is there a good reason why this option isn't active by default or can be activated by default? If not, please make it a default setting. Thank you.

As a result from several internal discussions it was decided not to change the the default for Media Boost option. It is the general opinion, that the use of external storage is not considered as the common standard use case. And we want not to optimize secondary use cases which might have negative impact on common standard processes. And the positive boost effect with the activated option seems to be negligible for booting a system from a remote storage.
Hello Thomas,
as a result from some internal boot tests, no significant advantage with activated Media Boost were recognized. The explanation for that: during system boot the overall system workload is rather low with enough free capacity. As a result the higher priority has no impact.
What other use cases can benefit from this shift of priorities?
It is our aim to optimize the most common use cases. Right now we consider activities which are making use of external storage media as a special occasional use case, where the explicit activation of this boost is acceptable.
Best regards
Thomas
Hello Thomas,
I don't see any issue with that. If the "media boost" checkmark was preselected when using the Remote Storage function, it would only be active during the boot from an external storage. I assume that the priority setting is a softlimit which does not come into play as long as no remote storage is used.

Hello Thomas,
externally attached media is considered with a higher risk for security attacks.
Technically, this boost is just a system internal shift of priorities. Process cycles which are assigned to the external media will get a higher priority. At the same time, internal cycles will get a lower priority. This is affecting regular operations. But the boost for the external media is needed only during the boot phase from the external storage media. For that reason, I think, changing the default setting will be an optimization of a special situation (= boot from external storage media), but regular processes will have a negative impact by working at a lower priority.
Hello Thomas,
my motivation is that remote storage is very slow in the default configuration. When there's a possibility to expedite the access, this opportunity should be taken.
Can you explain what you mean with the security aspect? Which difference does it make?

Thank you Thomas for this idea. We have re-assigned this idea to the iRMC category. What is your reason / motivation to activate the AVR Media Boost option as default? Is it the most common use case to boot from an external USB media? And regarding security aspects, do you think this activated option will support a reliable standard?
